More Than Baseball: Empowering Youth and Communities in Barahona, Dominican Republic

How a locally based nonprofit is helping over 300 children stay in school, build life skills, and create pathways to a stronger future since 2020.

In the Dominican Republic, baseball is more than a game—it’s a source of hope, identity, and opportunity. Yet for many children, especially in underserved regions like Barahona, the path forward is often shaped by limited resources, economic hardship, and lack of access to consistent education and youth programs. Empower Baseball, our nonprofit organization, is based in Barahona, Dominican Republic, and exists totally to change that reality by using baseball as a tool for education, mentorship, and community development.

How Empower Baseball Is Changing Lives

Since its inception in 2020, Empower Baseball has positively impacted the lives of more than 300 children, providing structure, support, and opportunity in an area where youth often face significant challenges. Barahona and its surrounding province are home to roughly 200,000 people, with a youthful population and median age in the early twenties, reflecting a community rich in potential but in need of investment and support.

Despite its vibrant culture, Barahona faces persistent poverty and limited development. Historical estimates have shown that a majority of the population lives in low-income conditions, with some reports from past assessments indicating poverty levels far above national averages. Many families in the region rely on agriculture, remittances, and informal work for survival, and formal employment opportunities remain limited.

Educational challenges compound these economic issues. Broader national data show that rural provinces—including ones near Barahona—have higher illiteracy rates than the national average, which can hinder access to jobs, opportunities, and civic participation. Additionally, in recent years tens of thousands of students in Barahona province left school, reflecting the pressures poverty places on families and youth.

Hope on the Diamond: Empower Baseball’s Impact in Barahona

Empower Baseball steps into this gap by creating a safe, structured environment where youth can grow. Through consistent coaching, mentorship, and athletic development, participants learn discipline, teamwork, and leadership—skills that carry into every aspect of their lives. Baseball becomes a foundation for personal growth, not just athletic ambition.

A central pillar of our mission is its emphasis on education. Our organization actively encourages participants to stay in school and understand the importance of academics alongside sports. In communities where economic pressures often pull children out of the classroom, this support can mean the difference between dropping out and graduating. Empower Baseball champions education as a foundation for long-term success, equipping youth with tools that extend beyond the ballfield.

Health and well-being are also critical components of Empower Baseball’s impact. Through structured programs and trusted role models, children gain a positive outlet that fosters physical activity, emotional resilience, and a sense of belonging—especially important in areas where youth may face instability or lack safe spaces for development.

Importantly, our influence reaches beyond individual players. By partnering with families, local coaches, and community leaders, the organization strengthens support systems and builds long-lasting relationships rooted in trust and shared purpose. Parents gain peace of mind knowing their children are part of a program that values character, education, and integrity as much as athletic performance.

While stories of professional baseball signings often dominate narratives about Dominican youth, Empower Baseball focuses on the bigger picture: preparing children for life. Whether a participant becomes a professional athlete or pursues another path entirely, they leave with confidence, skills, and hope.
